Twitter adds follow suggestions to iPhone app’s main timeline

Twitter has announced a new update to its iPhone app that will make it easier for users to track down new people to follow.

Having apparently come to the conclusion that many users are eager to see more content they didn’t ask for in their main timelines, the social network will now present a list of users you may be interested in following at the top of the screen.

The new “who to follow” section, which was previously accessible by tapping a button in the upper-left corner, will now be available without any effort, pushing the rest of your timeline even lower on the screen.

In this writer’s opinion, the move is aggressive and hostile toward users, who come to Twitter primarily to read tweets. While finding new people to follow is an important part of Twitterm replacing the actual content the users came to see with a list of extra places to get more content (which will then be replaced by something else) seems like a poor decision.

This writer recommends that readers who actually want to use their timelines as timelines consider downloading an alternative client, such as Tweetbot or Twitterrific. 9to5Mac has previously covered how Twitter’s ever-worsening mobile app and treatment of third-party developers is harming the network’s overall ecosystem.
