Sn0wbreeze 2.2.1 Download Available: Fixes iBooks

Sn0wbreeze for Windows users has been updated to 2.2.1 by iH8sn0w. This latest release fixes the iBooks issue, and includes drag and drop for firmware files, plus fixes iREB issues for the iPhone 3G on “Waiting for iBSS”. It will also jailbreak iOS 4.2.6 for Verizon iPhone users.

How is sn0wbreeze different from greenpois0n?

Sn0wbreeze is the Windows equivalent of PwnageTool. These two jailbreak tools create a custom jailbroken firmware that you use to restore your iPhone with. Sn0wbreeze/PwnageTool will allow you to update to the latest firmware while keeping your existing baseband firmware for those that need an unlock. So after using sn0wbreeze/PwnageTool you can then use ultrasn0w 1.2 to unlock your iPhone 4/3GS/3G.

If you don’t care for an unlock, just use our greenpois0n tutorials for iOS 4.2.1.

[Update] iPad 2 Event Set For March 2, 2011

Update 1: Looks like the NYT and Reuters have updated their articles to confirm this March 2nd date, according to their sources.

From Reuters:

One person familiar with the matter said recent speculation about a delay until June was “simply not true” as Apple is planning a launch in the same seasonal schedule as the first iPad, which went on sale in April 2010.

For everyone who has been following the iPad 2 hardware, software, and release date rumors, a bombshell has just been dropped.

Apple has reportedly scheduled an iPad 2 media event for March 2, 2011.

As the rumors have pointed out over the last several months, the iPad 2 is expected to be thinner, feature a better display, a faster processor, have larger storage, and feature front and back facing cameras.

According to sources close to the media event situation, the March 2 event is firm and will be held in San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

At this time, it is unclear when Apple will be sending out invites, but it will probably be late this week or early next week.

The iPad 2 Review You’ve Been Waiting For [Video]

The iPad should be getting a refresh soon from Apple. What will the iPad 2 bring? Rumours point to possibly a new 6-inch iPad, front-facing camera, no Home button, and a new enhanced A4 chip.

We also keep hearing about a larger resolution on the iPad 2, which brings us to the following video review of the next iPad 2. I think you’re going to want this:

The video was made by Norwegians Eskild E. Fors and Anders Overgaard. It’s a bit over the top, but has its moments. Well done guys.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 4.2.1 with PwnageTool 4.2 (Mac)

If you want to jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 4.2.1, and you don’t require an unlock, use Greenpois0n. However, if you want to remain at an unlockable baseband, you’ll want to use PwnageTool 4.2 (Mac) or sn0wbreeze 2.2 (Windows).

Here’s a brief tutorial on how to jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 4.2.1 with PwnageTool. It’s straightforward and similar to Greenpois0n, except you will restore iPhone with a custom firmware that PwnageTool 4.2 will create for you.

By restoring with a custom firmware, and not updating to 4.2.1 in iTunes, your iPhone baseband will remain the same. This only applies to people who need an unlocked iPhone, and want to continue with an unlockable baseband.

As always, jailbreak at your own risk. We are not responsible for anything that goes wrong.

Brief Step by Step Guide on How to Jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 4.2.1 with PwnageTool 4.2 (Mac Only)

1. Download the latest version of iTunes. Sync your iPhone before you begin.

2. Download iOS 4.2.1 firmware for your iPhone here, and PwnageTool 4.2 here. Save both to your desktop.

3. Launch PwnageTool, and select Expert Mode, then select your device.

4. Browse for iOS 4.2.1 firmware, click Open. Next, select ‘General’. If your iPhone is on an official carrier, untick ‘Activate the phone’. If you want to use your iPhone on an unofficial carrier, tick this box.

5. Click Build, then PwnageTool will start creating the custom firmware to jailbreak your iPhone. You will be asked for your system password for PwnageTool to proceed. Choose your desktop to save the Custom firmware:

6. Now, you’ll have to enter DFU mode (if this messes up, try again; takes some practice) by:

a) Hold the Power/Home buttons for 10 seconds
b) Release the Power button, but keep holding Home for 10 seconds
c) If successful, you’ll be in DFU mode.

7. Launch iTunes, select your iPhone. Press ‘Alt/Option’ on your keyboard, then click on ‘Restore.’ An iTunes prompt appears–select the CUSTOM firmware created by PwnageTool.

8. As your iPhone restores (10 minutes or so), it will be jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1, with your existing baseband. The iPhone should reboot, and the jailbreak will be done. Cydia will now be on your homescreen.

sn0wbreeze 2.2 Jailbreak for 4.2.1 Download Available

Hot on the heels of the release of the jailbreak tool PwnageTool 4.2, which allows for custom firmware restores for Mac users, sn0wbreeze 2.2r2 has been released for PC users. sn0wbreeze essentially is PwnageTool for Windows users. It also includes the latest iBook and AT2 wifi fixes.

sn0wbreeze 2.2 uses the same untethered jailbreak from Greenpois0n. Canadian iPhone hacker/developer ih8sn0w released it just over an hour ago:

PwnageTool 4.2 Download Now Available; Fixes iBooks Issue

The iPhone Dev Team has just released PwnageTool 4.2, which will allow for iPhone unlockers to restore with a custom firmware to retain their existing baseband and unlock. They used the “feedface” untether from Greenpois0n, with permission from the Chronic Dev Team.

So if you own an iPhone 4, and want to retain your baseband but update to iOS 4.2.1, you want to use PwnageTool.

There are also two improvements to the iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak:
- fixes the iBooks issue
- fixes the wifi problem with Apple TV 2G

PwnageTool also supports all the other 4.2.1 devices other than iPod touch 2G:

iPhone3G
iPhone3GS
iPhone4
iPhone4-Verizon
iPod touch 3G
iPod touch 4G
iPad
AppleTV 2G

An Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3 is Around the Corner

With iOS 4.3 around the corner, it looks like there is hope for an untethered jailbreak:

It also appears that a security researcher named @i0n1c has a 4.3 untether ready for when Apple releases the final 4.3 FW, so it may not be a long wait at all with 4.3!

PwnageTool is for Mac only. Download here. Let me know how it works for you!

Rumour: iPhone 5 With Slide Out Keyboard? Hell No

Lots of iPhone rumours today. First, we heard about the iPhone Nano (check out mockups here), and now AppleInsider reports on the rumours of iPhone 5 prototypes seen with a slide out keyboard, via a Taiwanese website:

The new details come from tw.apple.pro, but are the result of a rough online translation. The site’s source claimed that Apple has built three prototype models for its anticipated “iPhone 5,” and one of them has a “sliding cover” that conceals a keyboard.

Another prototype reportedly built by Apple looks largely like the iPhone 4, but has improved hardware including longer battery life and superior camera. That version of the handset would not be a major physical change from the previous-generation iPhone 4, and would be akin to the iPhone 3GS replacing the iPhone 3G, the report said.

Ain’t gonna happen.

Remember this? Steve Jobs introducing the original iPhone, in 2007:

“What’s wrong with their user interfaces? Well, the problem with them is really in the bottom 40 there. It’s this stuff right here [screen shows physical keyboards]. They all have these keyboards that are there whether you need them or not to be there. And they all have these control buttons that are fixed in plastic.”

Fast forward to 5:05:

I don’t see Apple going back in time, and introducing a physical keyboard. That’s the last thing Steve Jobs would ever do.

What do you think? Do you still crave a physical keyboard?

When is iOS 4.3 Being Released? Signs Point to February 28th

Looks like those earlier rumours of iOS 4.3 being released today have been squashed. The latest hints of a possible release date point to February 28th, as reported by Macerkopf.de.

News Corp’s The Daily, has just extended their free subscription to February 28th. The Daily’s free subscription was supposed to expire today, hence the link to iOS 4.3, as new subscription APIs were to be included in the release.

Typically Apple releases a Golden Master (GM) seed to developers prior to public releases, and we haven’t seen any GM downloads yet. Could iOS 4.3 final be released in time with a new iPad refresh, or even an iPhone Nano release?

iPad 2 Event In Late February, March Release?

This week, Macotakara reports that Apple is planning a media event near the end of February to launch the next-generation iPad. A release date has been estimated for March 2011.

Aside from a possible event, the site offers no other additional details. Due to the lack of details, the legitimacy of the claims is unknown. However March is an expected time-frame for the next-generation iPad release.

Recent stories point to iPad 2 devices seen in the wild, with various component makers further revealing, mostly, unconfirmed production part reports.

A dash of speed, 3D and apps

A dash of speed, 3D and apps: "Today, we’re excited to bring several new features from Chrome’s beta channel to the stable build, including WebGL, Chrome Instant, and the Chrome Web Store.

WebGL is a new technology which brings hardware-accelerated 3D graphics to the browser. With WebGL in Chrome, you can experience rich 3D experiences right inside the browser with no need for additional software. Curious about the three-dimensional possibilities? Try out these demos to experience the power of WebGL in the latest stable version of Chrome.

With Chrome Instant (à la Google Instant), web pages that you frequently visit will begin loading as soon as you start typing the URL. (“Look, Mom - no enter key!”). If supported by your default search engine, search results appear instantly as you type queries in the omnibox. To try out Instant, you’ll need to enable it in the Basics tab of Chrome’s options.

Lastly, the Chrome Web Store is now open to all Chrome users in the United States. As part of this, we’ve now added a link to the Chrome Web Store on the New Tab page, along with two sample apps. (If you don’t use these sample apps, they will automatically disappear after some time).

Some of the newest additions in the Chrome Web Store include BBC GoodFood, Autodesk, Sesame Street, nine King.com Games and Marvel Comics. There are also many apps that take advantage of the latest web technologies to deliver an immersive experience, such as Tweetdeck and The New York Times. While the store is currently only available for Chrome users in the U.S., we’re working hard to expand availability to users around the world soon, so stay tuned!

Internet Speeds: Canada Versus The World

Update 1: Check out this unreal website, at themeter.ca via @UsageBasedBill:

Our coverage of User-Based Billing (UBB) has resulted in the CRTC’s decision to implement this for Internet to be delayed thanks to you (415,000+). With some of the most expensive Internet bandwidth in the world, how do speeds in Canada compare with countries around the globe?

The CBC used data from netindex.com to compile the following graphs of Internet upload and download speeds, comparing Canada versus the world:

Interesting details:

  • Download speeds: Canada comes 36th in terms of average download speed, at 9.52 megabits per second (Mbps). The US is ranked 31st, the UK, 29th.
  • Upload speeds: Canada is in 64th spot globally, at 1.35Mbps, behind smaller countries with less developed infrastructures, including:
  • Mozambique, ranked 62nd, at 1.41Mbps.
  • Swaziland, ranked 61st, at 1.43Mbps.
  • Kenya, ranked 58th, at 1.52 Mbps.
  • Kazakhstan, ranked 40th, at 2.10Mbps.
  • Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society ranked Canada 25th out of 30 countries in a report that looked at pricing for services ranging from low-speed to high-speed connectivity.

CRTC Chairman Grilled by Commons Committee

CRTC chairman, Konrad von Finckenstein, appeared before a Commons Committee yesterday to justify and explain his decision over UBB. Here are some quotes from him:

…In light of these requests and the evident concerns expressed by Canadians, the Commission has decided to: Delay the implementation of usage-based billing for wholesale customers by at least 60 days…

…I would like to reiterate the Commission’s view that usage-based billing is a legitimate principle for pricing Internet services. We are convinced that Internet services are no different than other public utilities, and the vast majority of Internet users should not be asked to subsidize a small minority of heavy users. For us, it is a question of fundamental fairness. Let me restate: ordinary users should not be forced to subsidize heavy users.

Tethered redsn0w Jailbreaks Can Run Greenpois0n Over It

Are you on a tethered jailbreak via redsn0w? Want to get the latest Greenpois0n jailbreak? It’s easy. Just run Greenpois0n over it, according to @MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team:

Yes, tethered 4.2.1 redsn0w JBers can just run #greeenpois0n over it for untether (restore only if you have problem) about 13 hours ago via web

(The reason that works is tethered RS doesn’t touch boot sequence at all, but GP does. They stay out of each others way)

Also, if you’re having issues with the Loader not installing Cydia after jailbreaking via Greenpois0n, you can use redsn0w to install Cydia:

For those having trouble getting Cydia via the GP Loader, just let redsn0w install it (don’t choose the Monte option) about 14 hours ago

(The order doesn’t matter: run GP after redsn0w, or run redsn0w after GP)

So there you have it. The official word from The iPhone Dev Team. Read about redsn0w here first. Download redsn0w for Mac and Windows.

iOS 4.3 To Be Available On February 14, 2011?

Today, MacStories reports that it has heard from a “reliable source” that Apple is planning a February 14, 2011 public release for iOS 4.3 at 10AM PST.

According to several reports surfaced earlier this week, Apple is targeting a release of the next major iOS update, version 4.3, in two weeks. We just got word from a reliable source that iOS 4.3 should be available on February 14th at 10 AM PST.

There have been a few rumors pointing to an iOS 4.3 release in the next two weeks. Such examples include claims from various reviewers indicating that AT&T will have iOS 4.3 on February 13 to compete with Verizon.

Considering February 13 is a Sunday, it is an odd day for a firmware release. February 14 however is a Monday, and is much more likely.

I know I would just love a February 14th release day :) . Thoughts?
